Tomorrow is Free Comic Book Day!
Saturday, May 4th, 2013
This year marks the 11th Annual Free Comic Book Day. I can say that I personally have made it out to this event every year and it's always a fun time! Each store sets their own policy on how many free comics you can get. For some it's one per person, while others let you grab five or ten a piece. Along with the free comics many stores also have huge sales or special events, such as artists or writers on site to sign books, or appearances by costumed characters.
Even if you're not into comics yourself, this is a great event to bring your kids to. I truly believe in the power of comic books as a tool to help promote literacy. I think they're a fantastic art form and I think Free Comic Book Day is a great way to introduce yourself or your little ones to the medium.
These are some of the books I'm hoping to get for myself:

I would definitely say this is an all ages event. My girls (now ages 3 and 5) have had a blast attending Free Comic Book Day over the years. The stores usually have a wide range of comics, with something that is appropriate for everyone, even pre-readers. You can search here to find a list of stores participating in your area. Plan to go relatively early, as the free books do sometimes run out as the day goes on.

Have fun! Let me know if you go.
I want to get that Smurfs one for my 3 year old. Nostalgia!
ReplyDeleteWe missed out on the Smurf comic this year. Did you manage to snag a copy Olivia?
DeleteFound our local comic book store (that I've secretly been wanting to check out) and once my hubby is home today - taking BigKid out with me. Plus I found out they sell the board game I want to get him for his bday.
ReplyDeleteFor comics, I'm a little worried about the violence. I hope they have some of the kid-safe ones left when we get there. We want Sonic, Kaboom, and Mr.Puzzle! :)
We got Sonic and Kaboom, didn't see Mr. Puzzle. They did have a great selection of kid-safe comics this year. Two of the stores we went to had the little kids books on a separate table, which I thought was nice. I hate when folks think because it's a comic it MUST be for kids. Parents need to pay attention to what they are handing their children. Comics are for grown ups too, and can be just as inappropriate for a young child as a rated-R movie.
DeleteI wish I could go to this, but I have a wedding to attend!!
ReplyDeleteDon't let that stop you Victoria! Today I was standing in the local store when a woman I know walked in dressed to the nines. She had skipped out on her sisters wedding to make a quick stop in for Free Comic Book Day.
DeleteGreat, thanks. I hope I have time today to go to my local comic book store. I remember as a kid getting 10 for a dime, the covers were missing, and the comics were rolled up in an elastic, and we would read and trade with our friends for hours
ReplyDeleteI'm not quite old enough to remember comics being ten for a dime, but I do remember being in grade school and paying under a dollar for one. And if you want to see well loved, well worn comic books you should take a look at my daughter's stash. Covers optional.
DeleteI wish I would have noticed this yesterday. I would have gone for The Tick alone. I've been so disappointed with free comic book day in the past I just stopped going. The selection looks a hell of a lot better than it did in the past!
ReplyDeleteThe selection this year really was stellar. And not to rub it in, but I read The Tick comic book last night and I was really impressed. It was hilarious, because well, it was The Tick, but it was also a FULL comic with a full story arc and not one of those sad little teaser books they sometimes produce for FCBD.
