Declutter Your Video Games

Are you like me?  Do you have video games that you have lying around and think, geez why do I have this?  What am I going to do with it? We never ever play some of these games, but I always just leave them on the shelf with the others.

I know over the years I have had friends recommend games to me, or I saw them on a commercial and thought oh fun! Then I get it, and it's anything BUT fun.  So it is played once, and that's it.  Or the other ones that we have played a bunch but just got bored of.  It is a waste of space, and money to have them sitting there on a shelf.  We could be recouping some money from them, or just making room for some new games.

I have a lot of great ideas on clearing out the old games, I just haven't got the time or gumption to actually do it (and why yes I did use the word gumption).

Ok here are some of my ideas:

1. Take them into a gaming specialty shop.  A lot of the companies that rent or sell games will purchase them for you, and will either offer cash or store credit so you can get another game instead.

2. Take them to a pawn shop.  Some will do games depending on condition, and what the game is.  This would be for more popular games.

3. Trade, or just lend them out to family and trusted friends.  My sister's kids have some games they have outgrown, and I have ones that don't interest me any longer.  I can give them my old games in trade for their games that would work for our boys.

4. Sell them online at a specialty site, you will get more for them than other sites.

5. Ebay.  I think we all get that.

6. Donate them to local charities: schools (if they are appropriate and the school has the gaming system), women's shelters, community centers, etc.

What do you do with your old video games?

  1. Here's what is like to know: what do you do with all the old Nintendo game cases. My kids play the games but they don't need the cases collecting dust in their rooms. It annoys me.

  2. I'm a collector (read: hoarder) so I can't part with the cases. I have an extra large lidded box from the dollar store which I've stacked the cases in, and then put the box in a storage cupboard in the laundry room. (ok, I lie, MULTIPLE boxes. I did say hoarder, right?)

  3. Ooooooh! I've never heard of musicMagpie.com before. Very nice. I think I might have to use that.

  4. Generally speaking, if I don't like a game, I get rid of it ASAP - usually by taking it to GameStop to get credit for it. We had a couple of DDR (DanceDance Revolution) games that we hated the music on, so we took them to GameStop and got credit for them.

Amazon is a place I buy a lot of used games from (hello PS2 games) - so I'd probably also consider selling games on Amazon as well, especially as I've sold via Amazon before.
