Reliving My Teen Years with Dr Mario

When I was a teenager, my best friend's family had the Dr. Mario video game.  I use to stay over all the time at their house overnight, and we loved the game.  However, I was terrible at it.

We were very silly girls, and it was super late, and there was probably a lot of sugar involved.  And we got this brilliant idea to go to level 20 (the hardest level), and try to play.  Up until that point, I had never went past level 10. I think I usually stayed on level 5, really.

We died. We died a lot.  I remember laughing so hard I was crying, and couldn't see the screen.  We made jokes, created songs, and just had the best time trying to figure this out.

Eventually it took longer than 10 moves to die.  We got to the point we even knew where to clear double rows so that we could help out our friend.

Slowly but surely we got to the point where we could actually complete the level, and try to beat each other.

I moved in with their family for a while and I would come home from school, their Mom would make me an afternoon snack so I could get to the game before their Dad came home.  He was hilarious, he would see me playing, and then start telling where to move.  And then inevitably I would make a move he didn't think was the best one, and he would say "Here, let me help you out of that!" and take the controller.  The first few times I would wait it out, but he wouldn't remember to give me back the controller.  After that, I knew what he was going to do, so I would hand him the controller and go do my homework.  About 30-60 minutes later he would realize what he would done, come and apologize and say I could have it back.  It made me laugh, and we would end up playing together as a family.

Needless to say, I have a lot of fond memories of this game, and my dear friends.

I never found that game on any other platforms, and have been searching for it for years.  My hubby knows how much I loved that game, and how much I would love to have it.  He has been looking for it as well.

Recently he was talking to his buddy at work about how he has been looking for it, and would love to find it for me.  His buddy told him to check out the Wii Store, and so he did.  He found out some retro games that we love, plus Dr. Mario and bought them!

Needless to say I was thrilled to have it, and have been playing it often since he got it for me!  The boys have been playing with me, and they love it too.  I immediately went to level 20 and the first round was rough.  But after that I didn't miss a beat!

So, did you ever play Dr. Mario?  What is your favourite retro video game?
