On the Board — What to Look for in a Gaming PC

Despite the fact consoles like the Xbox One and PS4 promise the ultimate in immersive and enthralling gaming, purists will argue that PCs are the only way to go. Featuring superior processing speed, more impressive graphics and the ability to upgrade at any time, desktop computers trump video game consoles in nearly every department.

But what should you be looking for in a gaming PC? Well, here is a little insight into the most important components and characteristics.

Design and case

If you’re interested in multiple graphics cards, lots of hard-drives and complex cooling systems, then you’ll have to put up with a rather large and cumbersome tower.

Even so, those prioritizing size and style have plenty of options too, as compact PCs feature Mini-ITX and Micro-ATX motherboards, which are still capable of impressive performance.

Graphics card

Seeing as this is what gaming performance depends on the most, your choice of graphics card should be top priority. It may well be the most expensive component, but is essential for an absorbing and engrossing experience.

If you do have a budget, then you could opt for a factory-overclocked graphics card with a lower base specification. However, integrated graphics cards don’t tend be that good for gaming and should probably be avoided.

Processor

The CPU might not be as crucial as a graphics card when it comes to gaming, but it still needs to be of a high standard. And although you can use minimum processor requirements as a guide, the bottom end of the CPU spectrum will inevitably lead to lag.

Choose a multicore processor capable of dealing with casual gaming and graphically intense titles. Having said that, don’t underestimate the importance of cooling either.

Peripherals

Along with internal components, additional peripherals can make a lot of difference too. After all, you won’t want to play shoot ‘em ups or driving simulators on a small and grainy monitor.

Remember, too, though that a wireless keyboard and mouse might look good, but they don’t tend to be as responsive as wired alternatives.

Bearing all of the above in mind should help you find the perfect gaming PC, but it is recommended to take a look at an online computer buying guide to get all the facts you need before purchasing as well.
